Marvel’s Fantastic Hit Netflix Series ‘Daredevil’ Will Return For a Second Season, But Showrunner Steven DeKnight Departs

We didn’t need to be super powered individuals to know this was coming: it has been confirmed that Marvel’s fantastic hit Netflix series ‘Daredevil’ will indeed return for a second season in 2016.

Charlie Cox’s blind lawyer by day, masked vigilante by night Matt Murdock will be back to battle the evil underworld of Hell’s Kitchen again, alongside Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page – although there is no confirmation just yet as to which cast members will return.

There is no indication as to whether we can expect ‘Daredevil’ season 2 before or after the big Marvel crossover series ‘The Defenders,’ which will see Cox’s Daredevil team up with Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and an as-yet unannounced actor as Iron Fist (please be Aaron Paul).

Behind the scenes it has been revealed that season one showrunner Steven DeKnight will not be returning. In his place, writers Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez have been promoted to co-showrunners for ‘Daredevil’ season two.

In an official statement, DeKnight says, “While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season, I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”

While some are anxious about this change, it should be recognised that ‘Daredevil’ has already got through behind-the-scenes changes in the past. DeKnight only took over after original showrunner Drew Goddard – writer of episode one, and credited as the series creator – was forced to drop out over his commitment to Sony’s ‘Sinister Six’ (which has since been put on hold – GOOD!). Although Goddard is widely reported to be writing and directing the Marvel/Sony ‘Spider-Man’ reboot.

Again, there is no indication yet as to which cast members will return, although we wouldn’t be shocked to see Vincent D’Onofrio back as Wilson ‘The Kingpin’ Fisk, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

Attentive viewers will no doubt also be wondering whether “that Greek girl” mentioned as having been at college with Matt and Foggy – a clear reference to Elektra – might also make an appearance this time around. If she does though, we can also expect the deadly assassin Bullseye to join the picture as well.

Marvel’s next Netflix series, ‘AKA Jessica Jones,’ is currently in production and expected to come to the online network later in 2015.
